OBSERVERS IN ANTARCTIC
United States Proposal
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) 1 WASHINGTON, January 10. The United States has invited 11 other countries engaged in Antarctic scientific programmes to exchange observers with the American Antarctic Expedition Most of the countries have accepted the United States proposal The invitation is designed to promote co-ordination, co-opera-tion and reciprocal direct observation of Antarctic scientific activities. The United States and New Zealand already co-operate closely in Antarctica, with joint operations at the Hallet stations. Russia has declined the invitation, after having indicated tentative approval The reason for the Russian decision is not known. The United States and Russia exchanged observers during the recent International Geophysical Year.
