PRIVATE HOTEL WORKERS
Wage Increases Granted
Increases in minimum weekly wage rates are announced in a new private hotel employees’ award.
Male cooks and kitchenhands receive increases of from 5s Id to 6s 3d a week in their basic rates, and female workers in the same category receive increases ranging from 4s 6d to 6s Id. Increases on basic rates are also granted to the following categories of male workers: waiters, 5s 6d; night porters, 5g 2d; day porters, general hands, pantrymen, cleaners, and other male domestics, 5s 6d.
Increases are granted to the following categories of female workers: head waitresses (where three or more waitresses are employed), 5s Id; waitresses, house-maid-waitresses, housemaids, pantrymaids, cleaners, and other female domestics, 4s 6d; laundresses, 5s Id; linen maids, 4s lid; general hands, 4s 9d. Employees who work on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year’s Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Anzac Day, Labour Day, the Queen’s Birthday, and Anniversary Day (or a day in lieu thereof) are to be paid one extra day’s pay on "full pay” in addition to their weekly wages. This provision applies only to fulltime workers on a weekly wage. Minimum daily rates for casual workers are: chief cooks (where three or more cooks are employed), £2 9s lOd; other chief cooks. £1 17s 3d; second cooks (where three or more cooks are employed), £2 0s sd; all other kitchen workers, £1 14s Id; waiters, £1 17s 3d; waitresses, £1 9s 8d; pantrymen and other male workers, £1 14s ,Id; pantrymaids. £1 Os 8d; laundresses and other female workers, £1 9s 8d; porters and general hands, £1 14s Id. These casual rates apply for the first three days of employment, and thereafter ordinary wage rates apply. \ Employers must supply workers with suitable otifer clothing or uniform for use during working hours, and launder the same free of charge. Where the uniform is hot supplied by the employer he must pay to the worker a uniform allowance of 2s a week, an increase of 6d on the former allowance. Where the employer does not launder the uniform, he inust supply laundry accommodation for this to be done dn his premises, or in lieu he inust pay a laundry allowance of 4s a week, an increase of 6d on:the former allowance.
The Hampshire Cotrnty Temperance League of Portsmouth, England, requested a licence to serve drinks after houfis at its annual dinner dance.
