“BARNES DANCE” FOR TRAFFIC
Suggestion By A.A. The Christchurch City Council will be asked to give a trial to a new traffic control method, the “Barnes dance,” at iight-con-trolled intersections in Christchurch. This was decided at a meeting of the council of the Automobile Association (Canterbury ). The chairman (Mr E. R, Casbolt) said that under the "Barnes dance” system, an intersection was closed to all motor traffic for a short period, when pedestrians were able to cross the road in any direction. Inquiries in Auckland had shown that the system was in operation at lightcontrolled intersections there, and was working excellently. “This would make things easier for the motorist who is making a left-hand turn," said Mr Casbolt. “Any system which will make the left-hand turn safer should be tried,” said Mr G. W. Tench. “Under the present system the motorist and pedestrian move together, and the motorist has to wait i." he’s making a left-hand turn.
. just needs a nervous person to have his foot on the clutch, and for it to slip, and he has run over a pedestrian,” said Mr Tench. “We should do all we can for this.”
A motion that the scheme be suggested to the City Council, for it to be given a trial, was carried unanimously.
