“FROM START TO FINISH”
Book Of Value To Jockeys (Reviewed for "The Press” by Grenville F. Hughes) The English amateur horseman John Hislop has written a book “From Start to Finish’’ (Hutchinson), which should find its way into every establishment that houses apprentice jockeys. It is the first book of its kind and one that racing men will fully appreciate. Some parts of the book have a bearing exclusively on English racing conditions, but most of its contents can be applied to New Zealand conditions. John Skeaping’s drawings and explanations can be easily understood. The ordinary, everyday events of stable life are true in every detail. The contents of this book will be of great assistance in furthering the work done in the apprentice schools in New Zealand.
I am full of praise for this pook. The foreword was written by Sir Gordon Richards, who mentions that the author worked in a racing stable for 10 years and was up to professional standard as a rider under both Rules.
