Improving Runner
A rapidly improving runner at the inter-club athletics meetings is John Austin, who is having, his first season of regular athletics. Austin, who will be 18 on December 25, ran a 440 yards in 51.2 sec recentlv at Rugby Park and last week he had the satisfaction of beating the inter-secondary school champion, R. Pask, in a 400-metre race.
Although he had competed in his school sports before this year, he had not recorded any outstanding performances. At the beginning of this year he switched from tennis to train for the interschool sports in the first term, in which he gained second place in the open section. Austin intends to continue his athletics when he leaves school but next year his opportunities for competition may be restricted, as he will be working on a farm near Kirwee. Later he plans to attend Lincoln College.
