Katyn Massacre
Sir, —A former German gauleiter has been arraigned on a charge, among others, of complicity in the masisacre of 10,000 Polish officers at Katyn; and the Russians are alleged to have discovered evidence in support of the charge. Was not this particularly gruesome affair one of those matters about which the international tribunal preserved a suspiciously discreet silence at the time of their investigations? It might be relevant to record that a neighbour of ours in Devon, an accomplished linguist who had lived in Warsaw for many years and was in constant touch with Polish refugees during and after the war, firmly maintained that the Katyn massacre was not the work of the Germans; and he is not the only one whose covictions on this matter, based on no flimsy premises, seem to have been conveniently disregarded.—Yours, etc., M.T. December 10, 1958.
