Cycling Fine Racing At English Park Meeting

The best racing of the season so far was seen last evening at English Park, when the combined cycling clubs held their weekly meeting. The highlight of the evening in the cash event was the brilliant ride in the four-lap handicap event by K. Brown. Riding from the scratch mark with D. Swanston, he gave away 200 yards to the limit men. Going round the top banking Swanston, Brown and J. Williams went round the field to reach the front. Entering the bottom banking Brown brought the spectators to their feet when he turned on an amazing burst of speed to ride away from the field and record the excellent time of Imin 58sec. D. Nelson, an Australian rider, made an attempt to lower Brown’s time of 26.95ec for the flying quar-ter-mile, but failed by o.7sec. The teams’ four-lap pursuit in the amateur section was an excellent event with the A team, G. Weddell, T. Kenny, B. Brethell, and N. Cowles, beating the B team, B._A Court, R. Fowler, D. Lyes, and G. Osborne. There was little between them for the first three laps, when Cowles, from the A team, withdrew, but only after he had given a very fast lap Lyes retired -from the B team. Over the last lap the A team showed its superiority in teams’ racing. . A’Court rode brilliantly in the final of the half-mile handicap, especlally over the second half of the last lap, when he got up for second, only being beaten by G. McMullan. McMullan also won the B grade scratch race. Results:— amateur events Quarter-mile Handicap.—lst heat: J. Bland (30yds) 1. P. Huxford (25yds) 2. Time, 29sec. Second heat: V. Lili (35yds) 1. I.
