STEEL BRIDGE DESIGN

American-Sponsored Competition Fifteen awards totalling 44,000 dollars are offered to engineers and university engineering students in a steel highway bridge design competition sponsored by the American bridge division of the United States Steel Corporation. The aim is to stimulate the best use of steel in the design of bridges. Open to professional and design engineers • and to University engineering students, the competition poses the problem of designing an overpass structure in steel to carry a two-lane highway at right angles over a four-lane highway on level ground. Eight awards will be made for winning entries submitted by professional and design engineers, including a first award of 15,000 dollars. University engineering students will compete for 9000 dollars in awards. Entries will be judged on the basis of originality of design, use of the properties of steel, economy, and appearance of the structure. The type of overpass structure, length of spans, and other factors will be left to the discretion of the entrant. Complete information and rules on the competition may be secured from A. M. Satterthwaite and Company, in Christchurch, from the United States Steel Export Company, 100 Church street, New York 8, N.Y., or from the American Institute of Steel Construction, 101 Park avenue, New York 17, N.Y.
