AEROBATICS CONTEST
Wigram Pilots’ Display Six future flying instructors yesterday afternoon took part in an aerobatic display at Wigram air station as part of their course of training. Flying Officer G. C. Hubbard won the competition, which was for the Lawson Aerobatics Trophy. Flying Harvard aircraft, the pilots brought their planes over the field for display at a minimum altitude of 1000 ft and completed a series of loops, rolls from loops, barrel arid slow rolls, stall turns and optional manoeuvres. At 2000 ft they simulated engine failures and attempted to land on a marked spot They were judged on aerobatic skill, display presentation, judgment of approach and accuracy on forced landing. Five of the men were former jet fighter pilots and the sixth a transport pilot. When they finish their training course next week they will be employed as flying instructors for Harvards. The men are Flying Officers Hubbard, A. D. M. Winklemann, W. R. Gardiner, M. C. Airey, N. J. McGuire and Flight Lieutenant J. C. Buckmaster.
