UNEMPLOYMENT IN BRITAIN

The Ministry of Labour said the number registered as unemployed *t the last check date—--1 November 17—was 538.000. Of this total, • 4(3.000 were . wholly unempmyed. and 53.000 temporarily stopped-'from work. A Ministry spokesman said that the previous post-war unemployment peak was reached during the fuel crisis of 1947 when many factories were forced to close. The unemployed in February, 1947, totalled 1,974.000 with the figure falling to 773,000 in March and dropping below the 500,000 ] mark' in the following month. The total of people in em- ■ ployment in Britain at the end oi l October, according th the Mini- . stry, was 23,076.000.
