EARLY HARVEST AT TEMPLETOIN
Oats Saved Froiin Winter Feed ’<
One of the earliest harvest!? this year in Canterbury—a crc| p of Algerian oats reaped on N<|>vember 29—is the result of ope of the few examples of a superabundance of feed during) this last winter.
The paddock, on the property of Mr W. Hinton at Tfemrileton, was sown in early Marc] t for winter green feed and was g razed heavily until August, when there was more feed on the farm than the stock could cope witl ~ It was then shut up t and when reaped a fortnight ago was a good 2ft 6in in height. But for the rain last Monday the crop would have been stacked, and this will probably be I done this week-end. The yield ii; expected to be about a ton ajj d aquarter of chaff to the acr<|.. A second crop of Algerian oatsj will be ready for reaping next '|xeek. as will several other crops i p, the district.
The grass which was sown |with the oats in March came .T.way well, but in the last few vjeeks has practically died out be phuse of the dry conditions. Littlte reoovery is expected hy Mr Hinton, paddock win have tto lie reaown. I
