Auckland’s £l7 million virban motorways scheme —the firsit in New Zealand—got under way) officially today when the Miriister of Works (Mr Watt) fired theA.first, shot in Wilkinson road, EUea.'slie. He launched a project to jgive Auckland 30 miles of high sjpeed highways which, when completed, will save an estimated £3 million to £4 million a year in tr ansport costs.
Mr Watt told local membcirs of Parliament and local body 'leaders: “This scheme is not just (being built to make motoring more l comfortable. It will reducte distances, cut congestion and cut petrol) consumption. It will mean bigj savings in overseas funds.” ] Mr Watt said the scheme benefit not only Auckland,) but New Zealand as a whole. j
