PERMIT FOR DREDGE
Vi tal Building Delayed
The necessary permit and currency allocation for the purchase of the new dredge to be built in Scotland have not yet been received ’by the Lyttelton Harbour Board.
A tender was accepted last month; and preliminary advice was gi’ven to the board’s bankers in September last and the necessary formal applications were lodged with the bank and Customs Department the day after the last monthly meeting.
“Tha delay appears to be with the Customs Department and every endeawour is being made to have the matter expedited," reported the chairman (Mr W. P. Glue) to yestel-day’s ipeeting of the board. The delay in granting an import Jticence was regrettable, said Mr F, I. Sutton. The dredge was of pa.ramount importance to the board'. The delay meant that stock;, of materials held by the bulldters were being helfl up. “TH e dredge is virtually required for o ur new harbour works and everj- month’s delay in its building i s a month's delay in completing the work,” said Mr Sutton. “Unless Are get a satisfactory
and early reply, we should take the matter up on a higher level or ask the local members of Parliament to get an early decision for us.” It might be necessary to send a delegation to Wellington, said Mr Glue.
