Cardinal’s Views On Parties

(Rec. 11 p.m.) SYDNEY, Nov. 19. The Roman Catholic Archbishop of Sydney (Cardinal Gilroy) said today he would take no action to prevent the use of his name on Australian Labour Party election advertisements, although he deplored i‘ use for political purposes. The party's advertisements, designed to swing Democratic Labour Party second preference votes to the A.L.P., quote a recent statement by the Cardinal, and a leading article in the publication, the “Catholic Weekly.” The statement attributed to Cardinal Gilroy is: “Christian citize- are free in conscience to join or support any of the political parties represented in our public life except the Communist Party.” The article in the “Catholic Weekly” had suggested that the D.L.P. leaders were wrong in trying to keep the A.L.P. out of office. Cardinal Gilroy said: “I do not wish to become involved in political matters which are the concern of the individual. “I wish well to Liberal, Country Party, D.L.P. and A.L.P.— everyone except the Communists.” Bantam-weight Boxing.—Glasgow’s British and Empire bantamweight boxing champion, Peter Keenan, was outpointed by France’s world champion. Alphonse Halimi, in their non-title bout over 10 rounds in Paris.— Paris, November 17.
