Fire Alarm At Retail Store
Sir, —The management of a re-1 tai! store last night showed no! concern for the safety of its! customers and staff when an alarm; brought the lire brigades to the premises. Admittedly it proved to. be a false alarm, but no action; was taken to evacuate the build-j ing until it had been established! whether there was a tire. I was I purchasing goods at the time when, a fireman came rushing through the shop, and I was shocked to| hear no signal to get out. Surely; the Ballantynes fire taught us a lesson to evacuate people immediately when an alarm calls; the brigade. A full investigation; by the authorities is necessary f<>rj citizens’ protection.—Yours, etc.. ALARMED CUSTOMER. November 14. 1958. [The Chief Fire Officer <Mr L. G. Osmond) said that a procedure of evacuation was desirable in any building covered by a fire alarm system. That particular call was by telephone to investigate a slight smell of smoke which was traced to a faulty light fitting.ll
