CYCLING COMBINED CLUBS OPEN TRACK SEASON

Conditions were perfect for the opening night of the combined cycling clubs’ track season at English Park last evening. Before the programme began, D. Nelson, an Australian cyclist, was introduced to the spectators. Nelson arrived from Australia yesterday morning with a Christchurch rider. D. Swanston, who has ridden with distinction in Australia. Swanston competed in some of the events.

For so early in the season the racing was of a very high standard, and there were only one or two riders who could not maintain the speed at which the races were run.

J. Williams, a veteran of cash cycling, was in form, and gave a brilliant exhibition of racing. In the four-lap event, entering the bottom banking. K. Brown, a brilliant junior rider from the scratch mark, made a forward move from near the back of the bunch, and Williams hooked his wheel. These two went round the field, and although Williams tried desperately he could not pass Brown. and was beaten by half a length. Eight-Lap Race In the eight-lap scratch race the field remained tightly bunched until the bell, when Swanston led out. Entering the bottom banking. Williams was lying in fifth position. He then moved out to go round the field, followed by K. Giles and Brown. In a brilliant sprint down the straight Williams held on to win by half a length from Giles, with Brown close up. third. J. Haines made full use of his handicap in the two-lap event, and won both his heat and the final.

The final of the amateur threequarter mile event was most exciting. R. Fowler, from the back mark, moved away very smartly, and at tine end of the first lap was up with the field, which was tightly bunched. After the bell Fowler jumped into the lead and carried on to win by half a length from D. Lyes. The field remained very tight for the first three laps of the one mile event, and at the beginning of the last lap B. Cook rushed through to the front and was not headed. K Dwyer made a valiant effort to get up. but failed by half a length. Steady riding was seen in the twomile scratch race over the first seven laps. Going down the back straight for the last time L Fibbens went into the lead and opened up a gap. Entering the bottom banking T Kenny began to make a forward move, followed by Fowler and B Hazeldine. These three from well back moved round the field to reach the front half-way down the straight. Kenny held on to beat Fowler and Hazeldine narrowly.
