CHIEF OF STAFF AT S.M.D.
Lieut.-Col. Tinker Appointed
The camp commandant at Papakura, Lieutenant-Colonel R. A. Tinker, has been appointed chief of staff. Southern Military District. His appointment takes effect early next month. Lieutenant-Colonel Tinker, who succeeds Lieutenant-Colonel E. H. L. Maxwell, had a distinguished record in the Second World War in which he won the Military Cross and the Military Medal He was awarded the 0.8 E. for his service in Malaya where he commanded the Ist Battalion. Fiji Military Forces, in action against the terrorists. In the Second World War. Lieu-tenant-Colonel Tinker served in the Long Range Desert Group and the Special Air Service and commanded several missions from Italy into Albania and Jugoslavia When he returned to New Zealand he became an instructor at Burnham Military Camp He was seconded to the Fiji Military Forces and commanded the Ist Battalion in Malaya from 1951 to 1953. His next appointment was brigade major. 2nd Infantry Brigade. Wellington. Later in 1953 he went to Papakura as second-in-command.
Mr Hardy R. Ballington. of Durban, has been appointed official honorary agent in South Africa of the New Zealand Tourist and Publicity Department.—(P.A.)
