Surprise By Coming Down At Greymouth

(From Our Own Reporter) GREYMOUTH, October 26. Paying a dividend of more than half a century, Coming Down, a straight-out trotter, paved the way for a substantial doubles dividend on the second day of the Greymouth Trotting Club’s spring meeting at Victoria Park today. Coming Down won the main event on the programme, the Labour Day Handicap.

Mythical Lass, the favourite, paid just over £3 in the second leg, the Progressive Handicap, to give a double return of £473 17s for £l. The track was heavy for more than half the programme fol* lowing showers during the night and late into the morning. There was a good attendance. On - course ’ investments amounted to £26.365, including £2717 on the double, compared with £23,456 on the corresponding day last year. The total for the meeting was £47.046 10s compared with £45,193 10s. Coming Down The Labour Day Handicap Was an interesting' contest throughout, with positions changing during the second mile. Bellis, winner of the main event on the first day and one of the backmarkers, reached the front before a round had been covered, being followed by another backmarker, Mendip Song, and then came Radiotron, Cossack Post, and Bessie Brigade. Except that Mendip Song had taken charge and General Advance had improved to be fifth, there was little change in the order until the final round. Rounding the bend out of the straight, Kawa and General Advance were on terms, and down the back they were joined by Coming Down. Once into the straight the trotter. Coming Down, had too much in reserve for the tiring pacers, and she eventually won by two lengths and a half from Cossack Post, which made up a Jot of ground in the later stages. Kawa broke 50 yards from the line, leaving Mendip Song an easy third. Then came General Advance and Bessie Brigade. Second Win Mythical Lass, an impressive winner on the first day, won the second leg of the double, the Progressive Handicap, from the second favourite, Twig, by a margin of three lengths. Question, Little Molly, Focal Point, and Haughtiness were the early leaders, and they were allowed to set the pace for two rounds. It was not until entering the back straight the last time that Mythical Lass and Twig were asked for an effort. They quickly closed on the leaders and two furlongs from home looked likely to fight out the finish. Mythical Lass had too much in reserve and went well clear round the home bend, and she had no difficulty in holding her advantage. Focal Point finished 10 lengths clear of Haughtiness.
