BREAKING HORSES
Action Taken By Officials A campaign to reduce the number of horses breaking at trotting meetings was inaugurated at the weekend. The stipendiary stewards at the Greymouth and Oamaru meetings, at the direction of the executive of the New Zealand Trotting Conference, warned the drivers or trainers of horses which broke for no apparent reason that unless these horses behaved properly in future thev would be barred from racing. The stipendiary stewards in charge of the Oamaru Trotting Club’s meeting, Messrs J. H. Lang and J. B. Scott, warned the drivers or trainers of more than 30 horses during the two days, and took action against two horses. The horses concerned — Matairiki and Dansey Ladv—were declared ineligible to start again at any totalisator meeting until December 27 next. It is understood that the chief stipendiary steward (Mr L. A. Butterfield) warned the connexions of several horses during the two days of the Greymouth Trotting Club’s spring meeting. Athos and Carlisle were declared ineligible to start again at totalisator meetings until December 20. They were dealt with on the first, day of the meeting Scrooge and Golden Present received the same penalty yesterday. No mention was made in the press release on the first day of the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday that the stipendiarv steward in charge of the meeting (Mr A. W. Wallace) had taken similar action.
The major water currents of the world run as part of a continuous circulation, completing a clockwise circuit in the northern oceans and a counterclockwise one in the southern oceans. Precise knowledge of these “rivers” is now of major importance because of the danger of radioactive wastes poisoning the stream in the future.
