Yachting R.FALKINGHAM WINS

One Boat Completes Course Turay (R. Falkingham), the only yacht which completed the course, won the W. Prebble memorial race held yesterday by the Stewart’s Gully Sailing Club in a north-easterly wind which reached gale force. Five yachts took the water for the race, but the Idlealong, Marie (D. F. Mclntosh) capsized before the start, broke a bob-stay, and retired. Another Idlealong, Tango (R. Worsford) capsized at the start, and the catamaran of P. Priest, Tira Rua, had to retire after the centre case was tom out by the pressure of the water.

Turay arid Gwenalyn (D. Mclntosh) were then the only boats left in the contest, but on the second lap Gwenalyn capsized. She was righted by her crew and tried to continue to beat up on the second lap, but capsized again and retired. The boat was picked up by a privately-owned cabin cruiser. Turay broke out her spinnaker on the run in the second and third laps and this stabi-i lised the boat better and increased, her speed. She completed the course safely to win. The race was for a cup given in honour of the late Mr W. Prebble, the club’s first president. It is an annual event which is held every Labour Day, and this was the second time which the race had been held. Results were:—
