ASHBURTON WELL BEATEN
Good Batting By Canterbury The Canterbury eleven which Played Ashburton at Hagley Oval yesterday won easily. Ashburton, given first use of the pitch, was dismissed for 96. In better than even time and for the loss of only three wickets, Canterbury scored these runs, and declared at 176 for six wickets. In the last 40 minutes’ play Ashburton lost one wicket for 22 runs in its second innings. Ashburton _ began badly, losing six wickets for 36 runs. The Ashburton patsmen had considerable difficulty tn handling the speed attack of J. M. Dawson and R. C. Motz, both of iv l ? n \J£ ep L to a length throughout. Motz, like R. H. Prouting on another p in the ground, also found a Patch a little short of a length, and wrought the ball up at an alarming height. Several Ashburton batsmen were struck, but none of them serifi?M y enough to have to leave the The only real opposition to the attack came from the opener, G. Wainscott, and G. Behrns. Wainscott played very steadily for his 22, but Behrns took the initiative for n time by hitting out. Although he played some sketchy shots, he surenou 8h to make top score The Canterbury openers, J. Cap- , ck and B. Quinn, laid about some indifferent bowling with a will and the score climbed quickly. They scored 50 in 30 minutes, and Capstick reached his 50 in even time. It was excellent batting. Capstick, especially, delighted with some beau-tifully-timed and placed square cuts. G. Fraser, the other Canterbury batsman to make a half century, was fortunate to reach that figure. He was dropped three times. , T, he best Ashburton bowlers were Wainscott and R. Millichamp. Towards the end of the Canterbury innings, Millichamp was beating the bat quite often. Scores:—
