AWARDS TO SCIENTISTS

Royal Society’s Presentations For outstanding work in their respective fields, two scientists from the University of Canterbury are to be presented with awards at the October meeting of the Canterbury braqrh of the Royal Society of New Zealand They are Professor A. G. McLellan, dean of the faculty of science, who is to receive the Hector Medal, and Dr. C. D. Ellyett, senior lecturer in physics, who will receive the E. R. Cooper Memorial Award. The Hector Medal is awarded annually in memory of Sir James Hector, a former manager and editor of the New Zealand Institute, forerunner of the Royal Society of New Zealand. The award is made in rotation for the subjects of botany, chemistry, ethnology, geology, physics (including mathematics and astronomy) and zoology, to the investigator whom the council considers has done most towards the advancement of the particular branch of science for which the award is to be made. Professor McLellan is to be awarded the medal for his work on theoretical studies of the nature of liquids.

The Cooper Memorial Award is made in memory of the first director of the Dominion Physical Laboratory, and subsequently Assistant Secretary (Physics and Engineering) of the Division of Scientific and Industrial Research. It is awarded every two years to the author of the best account of research work in New Zealand in physics or engineering. The society is to make the award to Dr. Ellyett for his work in connexion with radar investigations of meteors entering the earth’s upper atmosphere. Both awards will be presented by the president of the society (Professor R. S. Allan). Professor McLellan- is to give an address on “Theory and Experiment in Physics.’’ a discussion of the relationship between the theoretical and experimental contributions which have led to the present-day conceptions of physics.
