Extension In Suburbs Extension work by the Young Women’s Christian Association in districts on the outskirts of Christchurch, where industrial exSansion has brought young, growig families to live in closelysettled communities, has been one of the enterprises of the Christchurch Y.W.C.A. in the last year, says the annual report Provision must be made for out-of-school activities of boys and girls in these suburbs, the report says. Organised club work has been started in the Hornby-Islington-Sockburn area by the assistant general secretary (Miss R. Barlee), who has been supported by the children’s parents and friends and she intends to extend the work still further. A visit from the world president (the Hop. Isabel Catto) at the beginning of the year, was one of the most important events. It sharpened the interest of members in the work of the association in other countries.

The two hostels had a good year and gave a home life to about 100 girls and young women. An “Open House" evening was held, emphasising the varied occupations offered to members—from sport and dancing to charm schools and dressmaking classes.

Several leaders travelled overseas or attended refresher courses in different pqrts of the country. Spencerville Camp is now free of debt, the report says. It is hoped to develop the project further by adding extra bunk rooms and an ablution block tn order to provide amenities for mixed groups in the near future.
