COMMERCIAL Variable Prices And Quiet Market

Prices were variable on the Christchurch Stock Exchange yesterday and turnover, although quiet by the standards of February and March of this year, was reasonable with some trading days this month..

Commercial Bank of Australia preference firmed 2s 6d to £5 17s 6d, and New Zealand Breweries (four parcels) and Fletcher Holdings C preference were also firmer. Wright Stephenson rights, K.P. Drugs and one parcel of Waltons were exchanged at easier prices.

Two parcels of Waltons and parcels of National Mortgage B and New Zealand Forest Products changed hands at prices steady on those of most recent trading in Christchurch.

QUOTATIONS IN CHRISTCHURCH

WOOL PRICES

Optimistic Forecast By Australian

(N.Z. Press Association —Copyright) CANBERRA, September 24.

•Wool prices must rise, the chairman of the Australian Wool Bureau (Mr T. G. Carter) said in the bureau’s annual report presented to Parliament today. “The trend of wool prices must go upward again just as the economic activity throughout the world must resume its upward march,” Mr Carter said. “There is a tendency in some quarters, when market conditions are rather depressed, to take a pessimistic view of the long term outlook. I do not share this tendency.” Mr Carter said wool had been far from alone in its recent fortunes and would have fared far worse but for continued promotion.

The report shows that Australia spent £l.2m on wool promotion last financial year, of which £lm was spent abroad through the International Wool Secretariat.
