RESTRICTIONS ON COLOUR FILMS

Effect On Tourist Industry

Import restrictions on colour film were doing great harm to New Zealand’s tourist industry, said Mr A. Stevenson, of Hamilton, Scotland, who is touring New Zealand with his wife.

Mr and Mrs Stevenson said that publicity of New Zealand overseas had given them no inkling of this country’s scienic beauty, and while they wished to make films of tourist resorts to show their friends, they had been unable to procure sufficient colour film to do so. Mr Stevenson said he had made a special point of visiting Hamilton to compare it with his home town. Having also visited Hamilton in Australia and Hamilton in Ontario, Canada, he had found almost no similarity in any two towns with this name. Mr Stevenson, a past district governor of Rotary in Hamilton. Scotland, said that Rotary clubs in New Zealand had made him feel very much at home. The broad Scots accent he had encountered while in Dunedin reminded him strongly of Edinburgh. Mrs Stevenson expressed her sympathy for the average working woman in New Zealand. She said she could not understand how any woman managed to shop, with the long week-ends and 5.30 p.m. closing of shops. Shops in Scotland were open until 6 p.m. and Saturday was the shopping day for every Scottish housewife. Mrs Stevenson said she admired the Maori greenstone jewellery and also the paua sheH jewellery.

Mr and Mrs Stevenson will leave for South Africa by way of Wellington tomorrow.
