EMERGENCY IN CEYLON
(N.Z Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 7,30 p.m.) COLOMBO, Sept. 23 The Prime Minister of Ceylon (Mr Bandaranaike) told the House of Representatives today that attempts had been made to Suborn Army and police officers With the aim of overthrowing his Government. The Prime Minister told the House that, in the light of information he had received about intended coups d’etat and tjie general confusion in the country, he would ask for a continuance of the emergency powers vested in the executive at the time of the communal riots in May. Mr Bandaranaike said the overtures to the Army and policy officers had been ineffective. The riots, which caused many deaths in May and June, before the police restored order, were -sparked off by the language issue.
