347 Males In 1957

Deaths from lung cancer have more than doubled in the last 10 years, said a spokesman of the Health Department today. The department considers there is a direct relationship between this and cigarette smoking. In 1926 lung cancer deaths among New Zealand males numbered 1.1 in every 100,000. By 1947 this figure had risen to 9.14, and last year the figure was 22.04. In actual deaths, niqe men died from the disease .in 1926, 122 in 1947 and 347 in 1957.

During the corresponding period, the figure for females has remained at between one to three in every 100,000, but does show a slight Increase.
