CRICKET Start Of Schoolboys ' Competition Delayed

The proposed schoolboy cricket competition to be held by the Canterbury Cricket Association on Saturday mornings is unlikely to start as soon as the association’s ordinary competitions.

“The schoolboy competition would not be starting on the same day as our own competition. There would be some delay,” said the chairman (Mr C. F. Collins), at a meeting of the association management committee last evening. There were several aspects ot the competition that had to be “ironed out” before the competitions could start, said Mr J. S. McGuinness. “Some people think that teams will play under their schools’ names but several schools would not allow that without a teacher in charge. The scheme will have to be run under the names of clubs,” he said. “I think we will get a fair amount of support for it. “I have in mind the circularising of schools setting out broadly what the scheme is and asking them what numbers will be playing. As most of the clubs have their headquarters at Hagley, the boys will have to travel to play their matches,” he said. Mr E. D. Milne: This matter was discussed by our umpires association at its annual meeting. I was instructed to tell you we will offer our full support. A few umpires out there will help. The matter was referred to the coaching committee and Mr McGuinness was appointed to assist because of his knowledge of schoolboy cricket. Colts’ Tour Arrangements for the proposed northern tour of Taranaki, Palmerston North and Hutt Valley by a colts team from Canterbury were approved. The Wanganui association had refused to billet players so it would probably be replaced by another northern association which was prepared to supply billets, it was reported. Recommendations from the annual meeting on dates of the club’s opening days and the beginning of the competitions, bonus points, new competition points, hours of play, and declarations were adopted. A recommendation from the minor and sub-associations’ meeting that the Canterbury team play a combined minor and sub-associations’ team this season in a two-day, midweek match, preferably at Lancaster Park, was adopted.

Part of another recommendation from the minor and subassociations that a minor and subassociations’ trial match be played on the Friday and Saturday before the representative match was adopted, but the venue for the match will be fixed later. The minor and sub-associations want-

e 1 the game to be played at Lancaster Park.

A request for a direct grant to the Town Hall scheme from the association was referred to the finance committee. Sub-Committees Sub-committees appointed were: Competitions, G. P. Dryden, R. G.
