Family Benefit

Sir,—Tfce conditions announced in regard to the scheme to capitalise the family benefit for housing are very interesting in the light Of the promise made by the Labour party in this matter, which was as follows: “Labour will on request pay the value of the family benefit in one sum covering the life of the child until 18 years of age provided this sum (not exceeding £lOOO in the case of any one family) is used for the purpose of repaying an existing mortgage on a joint family home or of creating a deposit on such a home.” Nothing in these words suggests a salary bar, ownership of a section in the mother’s name, or any other restrictive condition. On the contrary if words have any meaning (except when used by people desperate for office) the impression was created that the scheme would be available to all recipients of the family benefit. As in so many things reality is far short of their promise.—Yours, etc., INTERESTED. September 22, 1958.
