Formosa Straits

Sir,—Mr R. Palmer may be forgiven for his views. Wishful thinking even pervades the air in Parliament these hectic days. There is only one solution for the Formosan upsurge and that is to hand the off-shore islands and Formosa over to Communist China to whom it rightly belongs. The nomenclature Nationalist China is a myth. There are Formosans and refugee Chinese occupying Formosa and living conditions there are chaotic. President Chiang Kai-shek has had his chance to promote peace and progress but has, failed miserably because he had no such objective idea. The same may be said of President Syngman Rhee of Korea.—Yours, etc., RALPH S. WHEELER. September 21, 1958.
