JEWELLERS MEET

Mayor Opens Conference

“It is good to see the creation and design of craftsmen still alive,” said the Mayor (Mr G. Manning) when he opened the fourteenth- national conference of the Jewellers’ Association of New Zealand yesterday morning. The industry and craftsmanship of the jeweller recalled the days when the economy of the country was built on fine craftsmanship but now mass production on a large scale had entered the market for better or for worse, he said. Mr Manning said that people still appreciate personal adornments as an expression of individuality. More than 100 delegates representing engravers, wholesalers, retailers, watchmakers and manufacturers are attending the three-day conference which is being held in Christchurch. The Canterbury-Westland branch of the association is acting as host to the conference. There are about 50 delegates and their wives from other provinces attending.
