IMPRESSIVE GAYFAIR

Two-Year-Olds At Ellerslie (“The Press” Special Service) AUCKLAND, Sept. 23. There seems to be no stopping the two-year-old Gayfair. He has won twice already in as many attempts and he was outstanding among those of his age who galloped at Takanini this morning. Gayfair (Coles) with his stablemates, Gold Myth (Wyatt) and Bryon (Campbell), went half a mile on the No. 1 grass 25 feet out. Gayfair began three lengths behind the other two but ran to them quickly and was travelling strongly at the end in 52 l-ssec. Byron kept close and Gold Myth was not far behind. What made Gayfair’s effort all the more impressive was that he covered extra ground on the outside of Gold Myth and Bryon yet ran his gallop right out. The next time Gayfair starts will be on October 4 at Ellerslie in the Welcome Stakes and if he manages that assignment well he will be a competitor in the Wellesley Stakes at Trentham on October 18. It looks as though it will take a good one to beat him. Two-year-old Track The other two-year-olds went on the two-year-old track, where the markers were out 20 feet. Two of them were the Summertime—St. Anne gelding (R; Smith) and the Red Mars—Night Storm gelding (Porter), from T. F. and R. C. Verner’s stable. They sprinted two furlongs from the six in 27sec.

Space Ship (Cameron) began a length ahead of his stablemate. Dark Summer (O’Connor), and had nothing to spare at the end of half a mile in 55sec.

Dark Summer is a two-year-old filly by Summertime from Leeside in B. C. and C. E. Davis’s team. She will make her debut in the first division of the Nursery Handicap at Te Aroha on Saturday. Powhiri (Christensen) and Sabaois (Frost) began quickly and finished three furlongs in 39sec. »

Shakespeare (Hillis) gave Aroha (Coles) a start of about a length and finished on terms over half a mile in 53 3-ssec. Shakespeare went attractively. He is in forward condition and is likely to make a good showing in the second division of the Nursery Handicap. At his first start he ran third in the second division of the Avondale Stakes.
