RESULTS OF FOOTBALL IN BRITAIN

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright)

LONDON, Sept. 20. A 60,000 crowd packed the Old Trafford ground, Manchester, today to see the new Manchester United player, Albert Quixall. Quixall, an inside-forward, who transferred to Manchester United on Thursday for the British record fee of £45,000, helped his new club to draw 2-2 with Tottenham Hotspur. Though Quixall did not score, he went clqpe with several headers. The United attack tended to put too much reliance on the newcomer.

Tottenham looked likely to gain their first away win of the season when they led 1-0 at half-time. Two second-half goals by C. Webster rallied United, now with 11 points, and two points behind Bolton Wanderers, who went to the top of the English first division with a 3-2 home win over Nottingham Forest. Nat Lofthouse, Bolton’s centre forward, headed home the winning goal.

Luton Town, who led on goal averages after the mid-week games, maintained their unbeaten away record, drawing 2-2 at Burnley, but dropped to third place. They have 12 points, the same as Arsenal, who beat Manchester City, 4-1. Arsenal have scored 20 goals in their last five games, to give them second place above Luton. Wolverhampton Wanderers, who appeared to be returning to the form which gave them the championship last season, fumbled their way through the home game against Newcastle United, and lost 1-3.

Fulham, top of division two, staged a second-half revival to win 4-2 at home against Derby County, after trailing 1-2 at the interval, Fulham throughout the second half played without their Scottish international forward, G. Leggat, who injured his right knee, J. Haynes. Fulham’s England international, scored two goals.

Fulham with 17 points from nine games, maintained a clear two-point lead over Sheffield Wednesday, 2-0 winner over Leyton Orient.

In the third division, Plymouth suffered their first defeat of the season, losing 0-2 at Colchester, and this cost them the lead, on goal averages. Reading battled on to a goalless draw at home, against Tranmere, to return to the top. The new fourth division leaders —by one point—are Shrewsbury Town, who drew 0-0 at Carlisle. 1 They displace Northampton Town, beaten 3-0 at Hartlepools.
