MONEY FOR REFUGEES
Contributions T o Fund
After an appeal by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (Dr. A. Lindt) the United States contributed 450.000 dollars to the Refugee Relief Fund, according to a statement from C.0.R.5.0. As yet, only half of this amount can be used. The rest will become available when it is equalled by the combined contributions of other governments..
France contributed 100.000 dollars, the Vatican State 500 dollars, and New Zealand, through C.0.R.5.0., gave £3OOO. This money will be spent mainly on the rehabilitation and care of the refugees. Most of these refugees are aged and infirm. The Government of Hong Kong spends 35 per cent, of its annual Budget on the care and settlement of refugees. Huge blocks of flats, each containing 445 flats, where families are accommodated at a few shillings a week, are being built all over this city of refugees. More funds are still needed, and C.0.R.5.0. hopes to be able to provide this, as well as clothing which will be collected in Dominion-wide drives towards the encTApf September.
