New Zealand Hotels
Sir, —There was a happy, though presumably fortuitous, juxtaposition of two items of news: one, a report that Dunedin licensees, embarrassed by decreasing sales of beer, are attracting custom by providing counter lunches; the other, a tribute paid by a New Zealander recently returned from England to the social value of the English “pub.” It seems that Mr Nordmeyer may yet go down to posterity as the
man who, however unconsciously, inspired ’ the introduction into this country of something it has badly needed for far too long. Such, indeed, is the contrast between the atmosphere of the average hotel bar here and that of an English “pub/’ That, in correspondence wit!) a large, number of Englishmen contemplating settlement in New Zealand, one has felt obliged, in fairness to them, to forewarn them accordingly.—Yours, etc., M.T.
