Northern Outlet
Sir,—l commend your leading article op the new northern motorway. The cost of a bridge over the Waimakariri will be so great that we should try to ensure that it will be in the best place, both for present use, and for the foreseeable future. A point that has not been stressed much in the present controversy, is the growing importance of air transport as against sea transport. This applies not only to passengers but to many classes of urgent goods freight. When Rongotai is in full operation and improved aircraft in service, it is probable that passenger . traffic through Harewood will exceed that through Lyttelton. It is also probable that soon there will be an improved car transport service across Cook Strait, either by sea through Picton or by air through Blenheim, or both. This will enhance the importance of a main arterial road which would be best served by a bridge in line with Russley road. At any rate this route deserves very careful consideration.—Yours, etc. C. MORGAN WILLIAMS. - September 4, 1958.
