Australia And New Zealand

Sir, —The reported statement of Mr Wentworth concerning the incorporation of New .Zealand in the Australian Commonwealth recalls the desirability of closer economic union with Australia so often discussed by those with the interests of both nations at heart. In the light of closer ties being effected by former enemies in Europe, it is quite ridiculous that Australia and New Zealand should be separated by so many artificial trade and financial barriers when world economic lems are common to both. Austral lia has so much to offer New Zealand that it will be a tragedy if our political leaders cannot rise to statesmanship by initiating proposals for gradual economic integration. No less of autonomy need be involved in this proposal. Yours, etc., R. WALKER. August 27, 1958.

Sir,—lf Australia is sincere in its suggestions and really wants closer relations with New Zealand, the first thing it should do, I consider, would be to remove her Shylockean financial barrier, the exchange rate; or is the “merger” proposal of Mr Charles Wentworth, M.P., his interpretation of the Australian version of a Communist satellite?—Yours, etc., KIWI. August 28, 1958.
