Obituary CANON F. QUINTRELL

(New Zealand Press Association) . NEILSON, August 30. The death of Canon Frederick Quintrell, the oldest , member of the Anglican Church ministry in the Nelson diocese, occurred on Friday. He was in his ninetyfifth year. A son of a Cornish fisherman, Canon Quintrell was born at Gerran’s Bay, near St. Austel, England, and as a yoQth was apprenticed to a blacksmith. He came to New Zealand when a young man, but abandoned his trade as a blacksmith in favour of surveying so that he could devote more time to religious studies. Joining the Methodist Church, he studied for the ministry under Dr. John Orchard, in Christchurch. In 1904 he was ordained curate in the Church of England, and came to the Nelson diocese, where he * served in the parochial district of Collingwood. He was made vicar of Collingwood in 1905, and was subsequently vicar of Reefton, vicar of Seddon, chaplain to the forces from 1916 to 1918, vicar of Picton and vicar of Brightwater until his retirement in 1938. He was canon of the Nelson. Cathedral from 1919 until, 1938, when he was made canon emeritus. He had two children by his first marriage, and five by his second. Surviving sons are Sidney (Hamilton), Frederick Roy (Oamaru), Thomas (Christchurch), and Stanley Quintrell (Nelson), and a daughter, Mrs Dorothy Bryant, Middlesex, England.
