Improvements In Administration An improvement m the administration of provincial associations was requested, by the president of the New Zealand Men’s Basketball Association (Mr C. L. S. Cross) when the annual meeting .of delegates was held in Christchurch yesterday. Only sound provincial • administration could give the New Zealand association the information required to administer the game efficiently, he said.
Mr Cross told the meeting that next month he and Mr K. Dowling, of Wellington, would put before the New Zealand British Empire and Olympic Games Association a case for New Zealand’s partifcioation in the Asian Ganhes. He predicted that in the near future the Asian Games would compare with the Olympics and that a great number of New Zealand sports would participate in these more accessible games in the future.
As from next year coachlpg duties for New Zealand and island teams will be taken out of the hands of the selectors and coach'es will be appointed. A remit to this effect was carried. 'The inter-island and New Zealand games will also be held as separate fixtures next year. Mr R. Woods, of Palmerston North, recognised in New Zealand as the “father of men's basketball.’’ was elected the association's first life member and presented with his life member’s, badge.
Officers The following officers were elected: patron. Mr W. Bascand (Canterbury); president, Mr C. L. S. Cross (Wellington): secretarytreasurer. Mr R. Leslie (Otago); vice-presidents. Messrs G. F. Briggs (Wellington) and R. C. Curtis (Canterbury); executive (all resident in Wellington). Messrs McLean. M. Yates, A. Bruce, C. Hamlin. S. Adams, C. Chalmers. R. Harrison. Tournaments for 1959 were allocated as follows:
National tournament. Hawke’s Baw, North Island open, Masterton; North Island B grade, Stratford; South Island open. Southland; South Island B grade. Otago. For the national tournament which opens in Christchurch today Mr Cross was appointed * New Zealand selector 1 and Messrs B. Wills (Hawera) and R. Thomson (Canterbury) as island selectors.
A system of grading referees on a national basis was adopted by the New Zealand Men’s Basketball Referees’ Association at the annual meeting. Officers W’ere elected as follows: Patron. Mr R. Johnstone (Otago): president, Mr M. A. McDougal] (Canterbury); vice-president, Mr H. J. Fox (Canterbury); secretarytreasurer. Mr G. Luxton (Canterbury); committee, Messrs R. Curtis and J. Cameron (Canterbury); New Zealand interpreter, Mr McDougall.
