Opponent Of New Iraq

(Rec. 9.30 p.m.) BEIRUT. Aug. SO. Unidentified gunman today shot and seriously wounded Colonel Saleh Mahdi al'Samarai, a former Iraqi military attache, and an opponent of the new Bagdad regime.

Colonel Samara! was dismissed from his post after the coup on July 14 which overthrew th* previous Government.

Witnesses alleged in the Bagdad conspiracy trials that he was one of the persons who tried to foment a coup d'etat in Syria.

The assassination attempt took place in a busy street in the residential area of Beirut.

Colonel Samara!' was travelling in a car with two other people when' heavy fire came from another car, which sped off as the colonel's car stopped. An Iraqi Embassy spokesman said: "We know nothing ot the incident. To us. Colonel Samara! is now merely a private citiien.” Police opened an investigation immediately, but there was no indication of the identity of the gunmen.
