Flight Of 7500 Miles
WASHINGTON. August 29. The United State* Navy said today the Vanguard satellite launched from Cape Canaveral, on May 27, may have travelled 7500 miles into the South Atlantic, instead of going into orbit The second stage engine failed to cut off properly, and the third stage fired at the wrong angle, and climbed to a height of 2200 miles.
An impact predictor device showed that if the satellite returned to earth it landed near the east coast of South Africa, 7500 mile* from the launching site. However, the Navy was unable to determine whether th* sphere survived the -heat of it* re-entry into the earth's atmosphere, because radio signals from it failed before that point was reached.
