Boxing TOURNAMENT AT ST. BEDE’S

Seventeen Bouts Contested There was a variety of styles, but plenty of aggression and determination, when 17 bouts were fought at the St. Bede’s College annual boxing tournament last evening. In the under 9st 71b A grade section, D. Cotter beat M. Heenan in a very closely-contested bout. Cotter was superior, with hard, straight lefts, and easily won the first round. But Heenan gamely came back in the final two rounds and made up lost ground. In the light welterweight grade (lOst), D. Johnston, boxing windmill style, scored a technical knock-out in the first round over D. Bradley. K. Stone beat K. Wilkins in a very popular bout in the middleweight section. Stone jolted Wilkins with hard, straight lefts, but Wilkins retaliated with constant blows to the In the open championship bout between M. Hanham and J. Burns. Hanham scored a well-deserved win. Both boxers were entertaining, but Hanham had greater skill and evaded many of Burns’s hard lefts. Burns often punched blindly and lost many points. Hanham, tall and slightly built, won a meritorious decision over his heavier opponent. M. O’Loughlan and P. Meates (heavy-weight) staged the best fight. Meates thoroughly deserved the prize for the best loser. The judges were Messrs C. Rundle and W. Ellery. Mr A. Thompson was the referee.

BILLIARDS B Grade Titles E. Greaves, who recently won the Canterbury Billiards Association’s C and D grades championship, scored a break of 71 in the B grade championship this week. Air Hostesses Graduate.— Twelve young air hostesses yesterday received diplomas from Mr D. E. Foley, assistant general manager of the National Airways Corporation. They were graduating from three months’ probationary flying duties. —(P.A.)
