Sportsman’s Notebook SCHOOLBOY CHESS TITLES IN CITY NEXT WEEK

An entry of 29 competitors from 10 schools has been received for the Canterbury Schoolboys’ provincial chess tournament which will begin at Christchurch West High School on Monday. The ages of the competitors range from 12 to 17, the youngest being A. Mulligan, of Hinds. L. J. Walpole, from Christchurch Boys’ High School, last year’s winner and runner-up to Rodney Phillips in the 1957 national schoolboys’ championship will compete. G. H. Lawden, also of Christchurch Boys’ High School, who was the runner-up to Walpole for the Canterbury schoolboys’ title last year will also be in this year’s event.

The winner of the tournament will be presented with a trophy and with the runner-up will become eligible to compete in the national schoolboys’ tournament to be held at Wellington, starting on September 1. The local tournament will be run under the Swiss Tournament rules and should be completed by next Thursday afternoon. Of the 27 players competing only five took part in last year’s event. * ❖ ❖

Fencing Titles New Zealand will be represented for the first time at the world fencing championships which are now being held in Philadelphia. Although there is no official New Zealand entry, the New Zealand Amateur Fencing Association has approved an individual entry by the Christchurch fencer, Mrs Enid McElwee, who was fourth in the

women’s foil at the Empire Games at Cardiff last month. Mrs McElwee will compete in the women’s foil championships which will be held tomorrow and there is a possibility that she may compete in the teams’ event with two Australian, fencers, Misses Kathleen Baxter and Lois Joseph, who recently won the Canadian national title. Mrs McElwee will meet strong competition from some of the world’s leading fencers, like the present world champion, the 20-year-old Moscow typist, Alexandra Zabelina, Miss Gillian Sheen, of England, who won the Olympic Games title last year and the Empire Games title this year. But Mrs McElwee fenced extremely well at Cardiff. She was beaten by Miss Sheen 4-2, and lost by only one point to the Australian representative, Miss Barbara McCreath, who finished second in the championship. She beat Miss Mary Glen-Haigh, one of England’s top women, who finished third in the championship and lost by one point to another Australian, Miss Denise O’Brien, who was second in the Australian championships last year. * * ❖ Table Tennis The first round, senior, in the Canterbury Table Tennis Association’s championships will begin today. Play will continue during the week-end, and the finals will be decided on Sunday evening. More than 40 entries have been received in the men’s singles. The present holder, V. N. Brightwell, has top seeding but will meet strong opposition from the second seed and present South Island titleholder, G. Armstrong. In the women’s events all of Canterbury’s top players will be participating. The seedings for the five events are:—

M. Hayr, of Auckland, recently refused to take the post of senior executive delegate to the junior section of the Auckland association. ‘‘l do not have the confidence of this executive, and, therefore, refuse the post,” said Mr Hayr. When asked by the president (Dr. T. D. C. Childs) to reconsider his decision because the nomination would not have been made if the executive did not have faith in him, Mr Hayr repeated his remarks and refused the position. Record League Receipts The gate receipts taken from the matches of the British Rugby League team’s tour were 50 per cent, higher than the previous best in New Zealand, according to the New Zealand Rugby League secretary (Mr J. E. KnowJing). Approximately £16,000 had been taken at the gate for the two test matches and the match against Auckland at Carlaw Park. The previous best profit from a tour of New Zealand by'an overseas team was in 1955, when the visit by the French team yielded a profit of £1630 for the New Zealand Rugby League.
