Table Tennis SOUTH ISLAND TITLES

Surprise In Men’s Singles One seeded player, J. C. Roach (Wellington), was eliminated in a first-round match when the South Island table tennis championships began in Christchurch last evening. Roach, who was seeded eighth, was beaten by the Dunedin player, B. Sonntag, in three straight games. The fifth-seeded player, J. L. Catto (Southland), had to struggle to beat P. C. South (Otago) in another firstround match. South hit some brilliant winners, but Catto’s dogged short-range defence won him the match. The top-seeded B. A. Foster had an easy win, as did. his brother, R. L. Foster, and R. W. R. Mercer. Mrs P. M. Purdon, the title-holder in the women’s singles, beat Miss B. Taylor (Mid-Canterbury). In a long five-game match Miss D. Donald beat Miss V. Braumann (Otago). Miss Braumann was a member of the South Island team last season, but Miss Donald wore her 'down with persistent defence, winning comfortably in the fifth game. In the junior events W. N. Evans (Hutt Valley) and Miss J. L. Sara (Nelson) impressed as potential titlewinners. Miss Sara beat the Canterbury junior representative. Miss P. Lambourne, with hard attacking shots, and, in a later match in the women’s singles, Miss Sara beat Mrs A. Williamson. The Canterbury subassociations* players/ B- Jenkins and Miss C.
