SNOW AND ICE CONDITIONS

With plenty of deep powder snow at all of Canterbury’s ski fields and heavy inland frosts providing skating on many of the smaller lakes, conditions should be excellent for outdoor sports this week-end. A heavy snowfall last week buried the rope tows in the Craigieburn Range, but all tows will be operating this week-end.

So heavy have been the frosts that Lakes Lyndon, Pearson and Grassmere, as well as Lake Sarah (Cass) are all frozen over and ideal for skating. Excellent skating will also be available at the Lake Ida and Klondyke Corner rinks. The conditions at the major ski fields yesterday were:— Temple Basin, Arthur’s Pass: Excellent ski-ing although snow becomes icy early in the afternoon. Snow level below 4000 ft. rope tow operating in bottom basin. Craigiebum Valley: Snow level below 4500 ft, good ski-ing available. Rope tow operating. North Canterbury, Broken River Basin: Snow down to 4000 ft, two rope tows operating. Mount Cheeseman: Snow level 4000 ft. excellent ski-ing, three tows operating this week-end. Mount Olympus: Snow down to 4500 ft, good ski-ing, rope tow operating. St. James* Field (Hanmer): Skiable level 4500 ft. although snow lying down to 3000 ft. No rope tow operating this week-end Lake Ida Ice Rink: Enclosure covered with 7J inch thick ice. whole of lake covered with 5 inches. About 20 acres of glassy ice will be available this weekend.
