PLOUGHING AND DOG TRIALS
Good Conditions At Rakaia
Ploughing under near-perfect conditions, W. A. Bradley (Courtenay) won the qualifying event for the national ploughing championship at the twenty-fifth annual ploughing match and dog trials held by the Rakaia Ploughing Match Association at Rakaia yesterday. He will now go forward to compete for the Atlantic Silver Plough at Invercargill on July 26. In spite of a heavy frost on the paddock yesterday morning the turf had prevented its penetration and the ground thawed in excellent condition. At no time was there any greasiness and the soil opened up with a good even texture. All this made for a good day and the match was well supported with 48 competitors in the seven classes. The large paddock in which the events were held enabled the big attendance of spectators to have an excellent view. - The champion ploughman trophy was won by J. D. Wyllie (Timaru) ploughing in the open double furrow event with coulter cut. An outstanding feature of the day was the winning of the plain ploughing by L. A. Breading (Rakaia). Competing with a four furrow plough against two and three furrow entrants he made a first-class job, in spite of the handicap of the larger plough, winning the district trophies for best ploughman, best tractor ploughman, and best plain ploughing. The dog trials were equally well supported with 62 dogs competing, many under the command of successful competitors at the recent national championships. The open event was won by C. A. McKay’s Queen with 98 points followed by R. M. Wilson’s Nap. The district event was won by J. Brown’s Kep. Results were:— Ploughing Events National championship qualifying event: W. A.
