PLANNING OF BENMORE

Designing Engineer’s

Address

The problems in planning and designing the Benmore hydroelectric scheme were not only technical problems, but were to a great extent due to its size, the chief designing engineer of the Ministry of Works (Mr F R. Askin) told members of the Engineering Society of the National School of Engineering last night. When constructed, the dam would consist of about 16.500,000 cubic yards bf filling, with a centre core of silty gravel and shoulders of a sandy gravel, said Mr Askin. There were 120 bore holes of depths- between ten and 100 ft with three hole’s of 500 ft. “There should be four 500 ft holes, but the broke his diamond drill about 375 ft below the iut-

face. We considered this was far enough.” he said. The cost of investigating the site for the project, would be “in the order of £250.000.” said Mr Askin. This was only a small proportion Of the total cost which was estimated at £36,000.000.
