Basketball INTERNATIONAL RULES
Replacements To Be
Compulsory
Next Saturday all teams in the Canterbury Basketball Association’s competitions will play the international rules and main iiscussion at last evening’s meeting of the executive arose when the president (Miss E. Yates) mentioned the decision of delegates at the association's annual meeting “that replacements may be made at half-time for this season only.” Miss Yates said she felt it should be compulsory for all teams to replace at half-time, so that all nine players got at least part of a game. “If it is not compulsory,’’ said Miss Yates, “you will .find that leading teams will field their seven best players, and what happens to the other two, who may still want to play?” All speakers agreed that it was most desirable that this year teams did replace, and that the nine players take turns in standing down for half a game, but the difficulty would be to enforce such a decision.
* Many lower-grade teams nad considerable difficulty fielding nine players towards the end cf the season. Miss B. Stone suggested that most teams would undoubtedly be delighted to replace. The international game called for greater physical fitness than nine aside basketball did, and most senior, teams were exhausted after last Saturday’s demonstration. Mrs F. Shannahan moved that teams with eight or nine players must replace at half-time, and any failure to carry out ‘his direction would cause the loss of points. Miss H. Yates seconded and the motion was carried. ‘ On Saturday referees will ce asked to undertake a certain amount of coaching for lowergrade teams not yet conversant with the international rules. Coaching classes for any teams interested will be held at South Hagley Park each Saturday morning.
The Ground Supervisor (Mr F. W. Hughes) reported that all courts had been re-marked for the international game. Miss E. Yates will be nominated by the Canterbury Association as a South Island selector.
Representative fixtures are:— Canterbury senior teams will play Otago at Dunedin for the Joan Young Cup on August 9. Canterbury third-fourth and fifth-sixth grade teams will visit Banks Peninsula Sub-Association on August 9, and the Canterbury second, fourth and fifth-sixth grade teams will visit Hurunui Sub-Association on August 16.
