Hu Hu Grubs For Breakfast
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, June 23.
An Auckland man, Mr Bob Brocas, breakfasted on hu hu grubs this morning. The fat. corrugated white grubs which feed on rotten wood are a Maori delicacy and are sometimes eaten raw.
Mr Brocas fries them in butter. He said today that he first ate cooked grubs when he was a child in Hokianga. Mr Brocas will be gathering 250 hu hu grubs soon for the Auckland premiere party of the late Mike Todd’s film “Around the World in 80 Days.” Various national dishes will be represented at the party, and the hu hus will be the New Zealand delicacy.
Today Mr Brocas asked a reporter to try one of the fried grubs. The reporter found it was fairly soft and with a sort of peanut taste. Offered another, he found it the same, with a slight woody tang.
