Arm Severed By Saw

A man had his left arm severed at the shoulder by a circular saw bench while he was loading a truck with firewood at the Eyrewell forest about midday yesterday. He is Mr K. D. Matthews, a chimney sweep, of 4 Royal terrace, Rangiora. At the time. Mr Matthews was working with Mr A. D. McKenzie, a firewood contractor, of Christchurch, and Mr C. Court, of Rangiora. It is not known exactly how the accident occurred, but it is believed Mr Matthews fell across the saw bench. Mr McKenzie applied a tourniquet with a belt across Mr Matthews’ shoulder and stopped the flow of blood. He was then rushed about 10 miles to Oxford by car, where he was treated by Dr. P. Lambah. Mr Court then drove Mr Matthews to Christchurch and he was admitted to the Public Hospital at 1.30 p.m., less than an hour and a half after the accident. Late last evening, his condition was reported to be satisfactory.
